When I came to Thuy An Center for Nurturing the Elderly and Children with Disabilities, my heart sank. Outside, Tet is coming, everyone is excitedly preparing for the holiday, yet in here the children are still wandering around their cribs, not being able to distinguish Tet from other normal days because they are not capable of taking care of themselves or recognizing basic things. These are children with congenital disabilities, many of them have no cognitive ability due to brain damage.
Currently, the Center is taking care of about 350 people, including 170 disabled elderly people who cannot care for themselves, the rest are children with mild to severe disabilities, and abandoned newborns. 85% of them cannot do daily activities on their own and need extra care from center staff.
Unloading goods from the vehicle.
Our class donated our savings and scholarship money to organize this trip. We have prepared more than 500 gifts for the children.
Moving gifts to different areas in the center
In addition to necessities such as food, clothes, diapers, and daily milk, we also prepared toys. Even though they have disabilities, It is still important for them to be entertained.
Colorful toys excited many children. The anticipation and excitement in their eyes when seeing the toys melted my heart.
A boy the same age as me having fun with his new toy.
Even this 40 years old man is happy when holding a new toy in his hand.
However, not all children can play with toys. There are children whom we are forced to give pet toys or plastic toys since they cannot control their behavior, resulting in injuring themselves and others.
Each area like this have 3 to 4 children eating and sleeping together.
We listen to the center staff sharing about the lives of the unfortunate people at the center. I understand more about the difficulties the children are facing. I hope to visit the center again in the future.
